The original was commissioned by the last Tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, as a gift to his wife, Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna Romanova. It was made in St. Petersburg in 1897 under the supervision of Michael Perkhin and Henrik Wigström, for the Russian jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé, of Fabergé.
