Alfred de Dreux is one of the first Romantic painters of the eighteenth century. He met Théodore Géricault, one of his first teachers, and exhibited numerous times at the French National Salon in Paris. His work is characterized by noble portraits and equestrian portraits, including that of the Duke of Orleans, son of Louis-Philippe of France.
