The work comes with a certificate of authenticity dated November 26, 1976, issued by Morosini Antichità Roma. This certificate, in addition to confirming the authenticity and authorship of the work, certifies that the painting was exhibited and presented at Christie's Gallery in London in 1973 (as evidenced by a March 1973 catalog). Signed and dated lower right.

The work, an oil on canvas painted by two artists, is composed of a splendid still life in the foreground and a hunting scene in the background. The former is entirely constructed on the contrast between the beautiful whiteness of the swan and the dark colors of the peacock's refined, intricately crafted plumage. The latter, however, is executed with a quicker, more nuanced brushstroke. It is reasonable to assume that the work was completed by John Gilbert following the death of William Duffield in 1863, the year the painting is dated.
