Antonio Francesco Peruzzini © (Ancona, 1643 - 1724)
Landscape with characters
H 178x158 cm - in frame H 192x174 cm
Recovered work, whose authorship is restored to its legitimate author although it previously had a certification that attributed it to Magnasco through a certifying document by Benno Geiger.
Following a cleaning of the painting, the previous figures of the characters (as shown in the photo) vanished, being posthumous and artificial, unlike the rest of the painting, which remained intact. Following this operation, the original figures characteristic of Peruzzini's paintings reappeared, far removed from Magnasco's style.
The excellent state of preservation of the painting allows us to affirm that this painting is among the finest works by Antonio Francesco Peruzzini. He is often considered one of Alessandro Magnasco's assistants. Indeed, in this landscape, Peruzzini breaks away from his classicist approach and manifests a realist and introspective vision akin to Magnasco's. Their collaboration began in the late 17th century and lasted for approximately thirty years until the early 18th century. This close continuity between the two allows our artist to develop a precise and unwavering identity. Indeed, in this work, we can affirm that the figures and landscape are distinctively Peruzzini, thanks to the skillfully rendered light and the particularly powerful paintwork, especially when the color is applied in layers that give it an extraordinarily modern appearance.
