The Dream of Saint Joseph, 17th century

17th century Caravaggesque painter.

The work is a splendid example of seventeenth-century painting. The dark background and the warm, earthy colors of the figures, moreover, reveal a direct adherence to the style of Caravaggio, which had spread throughout the peninsula in the first half of the seventeenth century. As for the scene, however, it depicts the Gospel episode of the Dream of Saint Joseph, in which the Angel reveals to the Saint the divine nature of Jesus and the dangers he will face.
