The painting displays a marked realism. The concentration and attention shown by the sitter as he opens the book and reads the lines of his recently written philosophical and religious thought are evident.
On the table, the pen and inkwell bear witness to the act of writing that has just been accomplished.
The painting also expresses a Counter-Reformation taste in line with the 17th-century Catholic Church's tendency to advocate an illustrious bishop and doctor of the church, such as Saint Augustine.
