The Drinker

Oil on canvas
h cm 42X30,6
In an outdoor setting, a group of knights is gathered around a table, captured in a moment of pleasant conviviality, raising their glasses in a toast while the playing cards and some coins are still scattered on the table, a reminder of the game just interrupted.
At the center of the composition, a young woman, illuminated by her light-colored dress, is intent on pouring the drink, becoming the luminous and narrative fulcrum of the scene around her. The vibrant colors of her clothes, the large plumed hats, and the knights' weapons contribute to the bright and lively character of the episode.
The contrast between the lively foreground and the open landscape of the background, with a waterway in the distance and some fortified buildings on the shore, accentuates the theatrical nature of the composition.
The painting appears to be characterised by that spirit of elegant worldliness and leisure typical of the French figurative culture of the age of Louis XV. Scenes of gallant conversations, games, banquets and entertainment of the aristocracy and social life take on a particularly important role. A significant point of comparison is the famous Le dejeuner d'huitres (1735), in which De Troy develops, in a more sumptuous context, a similar convivial theme.
The painting, which certainly has a decorative effect, thus restores a lively episode of the gallant and recreational life of early eighteenth-century French painting.
