Neo-Gothic style altar with the Sorrowful Virgin at the foot of the Cross, 19th century

h cm 79x58x23
The central plaque with the Virgin is made of Limoges enamel on copper; signed lower right with the monogram JC.
The image of the Virgin is taken from a work by Paul Delaroche (1797-1856) who was very famous in the 19th century.

Limoges enamel is a famous and ancient technique for decorating metal (copper, gold, silver) that originated in the Middle Ages. After centuries of ups and downs, it experienced a revival in the 19th century, combining with the refined, eclectic taste of the era.
