Ernesto Treccani was an Italian realist painter of the twentieth century. Born in Milan in 1920 and son of the senator Giovanni Treccani degli Alfieri, founder of the Treccani Institute, he began at an early age to be part of the avant-garde and anti-fascist artistic groups. At the age of 18 he founded the magazine Corrente connected to the homonymous artistic group made up of artists such as Renato Birolli, Bruno Cassinari, AligiSassu, Renato Guttuso and Emilio Vedova. After the war, in line with his anti-fascist political thought, he was among the most significant exponents of Italian neo-realism. The first personal exhibition took place in 1949 at the Il Milione gallery in Milan, which was followed by several participations in the Venice Biennale, at the Leicester Gallery in London and at the Heller Gallery in New York. In 1978 he created the Corrente Foundation, a center for cultural initiatives, exhibitions, debates in the various fields of culture and art. In 1989 the Municipality of Milan dedicated a large anthology to the artist at Palazzo Reale, while another important retrospective of his works was hosted at the Bandera Foundation in Busto Arsizio in 2003. He passed away in Milan on 27 November 2009. </ o: p>
