Mechanical art aroused great enthusiasm in Switzerland at the end of the 18th century. In 1796 a new instrument was born, the cylinder musical box invented by the Genevan Antoine Favre. Initially conceived as an element to be integrated into watches, jewelery boxes and snuff boxes, this system experienced great success when it was mounted in a box, intended to be displayed in living rooms as an independent object.
