The Repentance of St. Peter, 17th century

Oil on canvas
h cm 55X46,5

The painting attributed to Domenico Fetti, a painter born in Rome and raised in Venice, painted the apostle Peter in a moment of deep reflection after his denial. The brushstrokes are full and mellow, with contrasts of light that reveal a strong influence from Rubens and Caravaggio. It is an icon of repentance and hope, emphasising Jesus' mercy despite human weaknesses. The “repentance of St Peter” is a subject that became very popular in devotional painting because of its strong emotional content, inviting the faithful to reflect on the importance of confession and the sacrament of penance. The theme of repentance was also the subject of paintings by various artists, such as Guido Reni's “The Weeping of Saint Peter” and Giovanni Maria Morandi's “The Repentance of Saint Peter”, as well as other paintings that capture the intensity of the moment, with Peter looking up to the sky and weeping.
