Ennio Calabria was born in Tripoli in 1937 and lived and worked primarily in Rome until his death in 2024. He graduated from art school in 1955 and held his first solo exhibition at the "La Feluca" gallery in Rome in 1958. In 1961, together with painters Attardi, Farulli, Gianquinto, Guccione, and Vespignani, he founded the group "Il pro e il contro." He participated in the important Venice Biennale in 1964 and later became a member of the Board of Directors in 1974 and 1978. From the 1970s until his death, he participated in numerous national and international exhibitions (New York, Milan, Rome, Bielefeld, Saint-Paul de Vence, etc.). In 2006, he received the prestigious Vittorio De Sica Award under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic.

Alongside her extensive oil and acrylic production, her pastel on paper work is also vast and significant: here, the compositions become more essential and poetic, taking advantage of the medium's airiness and immediacy. In our work, "Light Cuts the Dark," the compositional structure is entirely based on the juxtaposition of two vibrant chromatic masses from which a reclining woman emerges, diaphanous and gentle.
