The work, dated 1938, is a splendid example of the so-called "Chiarismo lombardo" (a term coined by Leonardo Borghese in 1935) that characterized the painting practiced by certain Milanese and Mantuan painters (such as Angelo De Bon, Carlo Zocchi, and Oscar Sorgato, as well as Lilloni himself) starting in the 1930s. These painters were distinguished by their characteristic light backgrounds and the crisp, luminous colors with which they rendered landscapes and compositions. This, of course, is also clearly visible in our oil on canvas board, where, from a calm and clear diffused light, the light and delicate outlines of the vegetation and the distant landscape emerge.
