Italian landscape with shepherds

oil on canvas
h 93x114 cm in frame h 116X131 cm
The canvas can be attributed to the esteemed English painter Charles Catton (The Elder).
Born in 1728 in Norwich, he was a painter specializing in decorative painting for carriages and the representation of landscapes and animals, and, in 1768, one of the founding members of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The subject in question, an airy and bucolic Italian landscape with shepherds, fits well within the English landscape tradition, finding, in the composition of the scene and in the rendering of the figures, numerous analogies with the production of certain autograph works by the English painter.
