The work, created by an anonymous Italian artist, falls within the architectural capriccio genre, a type of composition very popular between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. It differed from the veduta or landscape painting due to the fantastical and imaginative nature of the architectural elements, which often combined ancient ruins with bold perspective constructions and bucolic landscapes. Our painter, for example, imagined two opposing clusters of buildings and a balustrade with a central fountain, all separated by a deep chasm.
