Pio Joris was among the most important Roman painters of the second half of the 19th century. Throughout his career, he participated in numerous prestigious national and international exhibitions (among others: the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878, the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, the Rome International Exhibition of 1883, etc.) and was among the founders of the Association of Roman Watercolorists in 1875.
His painting style was always veristic, but rendered with a beautiful, fluid, and luminous touch; this is also evident in our "The Childhood of Adam," where the children's bodies and the surrounding nature are painted with quick, precise brushstrokes.
