The episode depicted is taken from the book of Genesis (24:1-67) which tells of the encounter between the young Rebecca and Eliezer, Abraham's eldest servant. Eliezer had been sent to Mesopotamia by Abraham himself to find a wife for his son Isaac. When his prayer was answered near the well ("The girl to whom I shall say, 'Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,' and who shall say, 'Drink, and I will water your camels also,' let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac." - Genesis 24:14), he recognizes Rebecca and gives her some gold jewelry.
