The painting shows a marked realism. The concentration and attention placed by the character in the act of opening the book and reading the lines of his philosophical-religious thought, just written, are evident.
On the table the pen and the inkwell are witnesses to the act of writing just accomplished.
The painting also expresses a counter-reformation taste in line with the trend of the 17th century Catholic Church in advocating an illustrious bishop, a doctor of the church, such as Saint Augustine.
