The painting, a well-known episode from the Iliad, is a smaller-format adaptation of a famous painting by Gavin Hamilton, painted between 1760 and 1763. The painter, certainly of the Italian school, must have known the composition through engravings that were in circulation immediately after the completion of the original invention.
