Pair of genre scenes within a circular gold frame with a bow at the top, 18th century

Watercolor
h cm 20X18
This pair of refined tondos dates, in style and materials, to the second half of the 18th century. The two watercolor scenes are painted in a light, joyful Rococo style, with meticulously detailed facial expressions and carefully crafted clothing and backgrounds. The stylistic reference is undoubtedly the painting of Jean-Antoine Watteau, with his elegant aristocratic entertainments and evocative portraits of musicians (note the gentle figure of a guitarist in the second tondo). The Louis XVI-style frames are gilded with ormolu, a technique particularly popular in the century in question.
