The everyday life of the fields, a pictorial genre that has its roots in the late seventeenth century and then established itself in the course of the nineteenth century, is proposed here with the representation of a young shepherdess intent on leading her sheep to pasture. The realism steeped in the scenic composition is part of that stylistic current that also involves the literary field, with the movements of realism and naturalism, whose themes of humility and poverty are placed on the same level as the great historical and religious subjects. In our painting there is no intention of restoring light, as the need of the Impressionists could have been at the time, but the exaltation of the countryside, of pastoralism and more widely of the popular genre.
