"Grandson of Jean Brughel the Elder, in this small tondo, even if it is foreign to his usual genre, his pictorial traits and assiduous attention to detail are visible, significant is the small still life basket of fruit placed on the left which testifies the painter's great ability to represent the natural world. Even the butterflies that the children chase, trying to catch them, denote the painter's love for the meticulous detail of many of Kessel's paintings in an exact and sometimes almost scientific manner the details, an example of finesse and exact execution."
